Gasoline Facts:

• The first gasoline pump was manufactured by Sylvanus Bowser of Fort Wayne, Indiana on September 5, 1885. The gas tank on this pump had valves made of marble and plungers made from wood.

• The first gasoline-powered tractor was invented on September 6, 1892, by John Froelich of Iowa. It had a vertical single-cylinder gasoline engine mounted on wooden beams and drove a J. I. Case threshing machine. Froelich formed the Waterloo Gasoline Tractor Engine Company, which was later acquired by the John Deere Plow Company.

• Up until the 1970's most gasolines contained lead. By the late 1980's most gasolines were unleaded.

• Talk about cheap gas, in the 1920's the cost of gas, with taxes, averaged .30 a gallon.

• From 1920 Through 1970 the average miles per gallon of gasoline for an automobile was about 13-15.

• Today the average miles per gallon for all vehicles, Cars and Trucks, is about 20.4.
